Shachna Itzik (Charlie) Birger

There has been new intrest recently in a local legend where I come from..There is currently under way a major motion picture (though release dates haven't been announced) titled: Never A Good One. The film gets it's title from a quote by Charlie Birger during a interview: Sure I've killed many a person in my life,But never a good one. (Charlie Birger on death row Franklin County Jail)

I only wish my dad was alive to see this new spike of intrest, Though born in 1940 he knew well of Birger as his dad constatly told him of him and the hanging, Alot of what was protrayed of him in documentaries are somewhat true, It is true he killed about 100 people (or rather was responcible for the deaths) but the part of him being a violent person was exagerated, He was when pissed but first hand accounts recall him being kind and a noticible gabber,When passing though towns he would routinly throw coins out to childern or even come up and give them money in person for ice cream, Despite being born in Garbania, Russia he spoke flawless non accented English.

How Birger's image came to be (Yes I have skipped some things as I want to make this quick):

Charlie Birger killed his first person in about 1915 in Ledford, Illinois, He was a bar keeper at the time. A loacl sheriff was going to arrest a fellow and the guy had a gun hid on him, He drew,Birger saw this,drew and shot before the guy could shoot the sheriff..This was justifiable homicide..

Over the years things start to get unusual, The the first shooting was justifiable, BUT over the years a pattern followed..Shootings routinly resulted from squrmishes or bar fights at saloons and night clubs, When police was called and arrived Birger would always claim either justifiable homicide or self defence. Thus none of these shootings was investigated much. All of this happening before the 1920's.

The 1920's

Birger was a moonshiner like many of that time..At first his headquarters was in Harrisburg but police gave him the option to leave town when prohibition agents began raiding it..He established his new base at Shady Rest, (a fortified large log cabin in rural Saline County):

Charlie Birger reguarded Harrisburg as his city and tolerated NO crimes, when a small shop was robbed the owner was personally repaid by Birger and later the suspected robber found shot to death outside of town.

Birger met another local gang boss: Carl Shelton..The 2 gangs quickly became friends but later had a falling out over a slot machine racket thus leading to full war and a historic first, The first (and probably ONLY) air attack on American soil by a American...(see later)

Both gangs built quasai armored trucks (which locals refered to as tanks):

During this time the Shelton gang turned to a new ally..The KKK..The KKK was deputized in alot of cities and became auxiliary police (especially Zeigler and Herrin)

Alot of shootouts errupted but 1 was the turning point as it lead to the death of S. Glenn Young (KKK leader and Federal Agent) this set the Shelton gang off, there was no turning back..A ultimate plan was devised to wipe out the Birger threat, Even though neither Charlie Birger or his gang was responcible for the death of S. Glenn Young: That idiot was killed in a shootout between him and a Williamson County deputy who was not a friend of the klan and hated Young personally.

The body of William "High Pockets" Mcquay is found in a creek near Equality (Saline County)

Mcquay was a Birger gang member and personal friend of Birger as well. Days later early one morning one of Charlie Birger's party houses in Johnston City is shot up and burnt to the ground.

Later John Milroy (Birger friend but not gang member) is killed at a party house in Colp, Later Colp mayor W.J. Stone is killed and the chief of police James C. Keith wounded.

Although never proven it is believed the Shelton gang is responcible for these events.

The Shelton gang drives by and tosses a bomb at Shady Rest but it fails to detonate, Birger decides to hit the Shelton gang where it hurts, He orders a hit out on West City Mayor Joe Adams,

America's first air attack on U.S. soil:

The Shelton ganag came up with a fool proof plan of action one day,They knew a drive by wuld not work and they knew a attack on Shady Rest would be suicidal at best,So they hired a pilot to fly over Shady Rest in a crop duster, Using about 4 sticks of dynamite bundled into a make shift bomb the cabin was bombed to the ground killing 4 people (burned beyond recognition and never identified):

Birger learns how the Shelton's was able to carry out this plot with with the help of his friend Illinois State HighWay Policeman Lorry Price, Birger is shocked he's been sold out and goes to take care of this matter, Birger kills Price and his gang kills his wife.

Out of all the killings he commited and the killings he had his members do for him he was ONLY officially charged for the murder of Joe Adams.

How some came to believe he was a violent person (if you're only reading the records of the trial and no other accounts it is easy to conclude this):

After exhausting all legal stragedies and failing, Birger's attroney suggested a plea of insanity, Birger put on a show the likes of which has rarely been scene since, He slobbered,jirated side to side in his chair,cursed the judge,officials,and news reporters..He had to be restrianed..But the judge and jury saw through his act, Birger was convicted and hung on April 19th 1928.

Just finished a 2012 Chevy Caprice PPV paper model

Actually I made the template 2 and a half months ago. But I'm busy and tired in college, when I was idle, I was too lazy to touch these models and car datas.

We just got a 3-day holiday, so I made this 2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV paper model.

This is 9C3 GII Heron White.
I think it's OK.
A few details of the lamps and bumper still need to be fixed.

Actually, about the real car, I like the Caprice very much.
It got no column shift, but the 9C1 "Small-Box shift" and 9C3 "Hand-Ring handbrake" are very cool.

However it got no Column-mounted Hazzard-Switch, no 6-seat version, what a pity!!!

The front turn-signal and side-markers are not like 90 or 96 "Sequential-Front-Turn-Signal". Only the front turn-signal can flash, the side-markers can't.

Red rear turn signal rocks! You can't see it in Aus (Holden WM Caprice), China (Buick Park Avenue) or S.Korea (Daewoo Veritas)

New police vehicle from Russia - Volga Strela!

You can always find this car by the road between Tomsk and Asino (I often going on this route, and I still remember this Volga haivng "MNJINUNR" instead of "IIOJINUNR"). :)
One thing that I still can't understand: why they haven't put DPS Aventador between "halves" of this Volga? These halves can be nice cover for any Speed Enforcement vehicle.

2014 Chevrolet Impala

Everyone as found on Serge's facebook this is what the next generation Impala will look like. Unlike the 2000-2005, & 2006-2013 models which use the w-body platform the same platform that the Lumina was built off of this model is built from GM's brand new Super Epsilon II platform which is a LWB version of the platform that the current Malibu is built from this was developed by Holden. This platform was also rumored to be used for the next generation of Holden Commodore and Caprice until Holden confirmed that those cars will stay RWD. However this platform will also be used to build the Cadilliac CTS' successor the XTS. Now this version of the Impala is a mix of the Malibu and Camaro plus like the Taurus this model is also rumored to get an AWD version similar to Ford's Taurus/Police Interceptor sedan as I heard. This car will also be a rival to the Taurus based Police Interceptor sedan in the police market as well. One more judging by this picture the side emblems that were killed off on the car in 2010 make an return for this generation. Plus this model will be the first to have a V4 engine standard with the V6 optional.

Ok I'm sure you all have been wondering why I ain't brought nothing out again yet..Well I was in the process of testing some new releases and tweaking others when I had a power outage, Some idiot DUI hit a telephone pole and this caused my power to go out for about 30 sec., This in turn messed up my PC and as usual it decided to lock and not start it's system..It started to do a format and reinstall the Windows 7 Ultimate BUT I knew if it did I'd loose everything and so I put my foot down this time and said NO!, I quickly switched it off after the format (so it wouldn't erase my stuff). The good news is my stuff is SAFE now..The bad news is using free ZAR I can only get 4 folders of it back per use so I have to open ZAR, select 4 folders I want, back these up to one of my USB harddrives,then close ZAR and repaet this process over and over..Gonna take a while but I WILL get everything back. Borrowing a few words from Lee Iacoca: Have faith in me and believe, You will see alot of action from me soon :D.

Well folks as of 0740 Monday I am carless.

My car finally died, It had been using a ton of oil since the accident I had with a deer back on December 4th 2011 and it would routinely get hot..I could always make it home to put more oil in it though by running the heater full blast (old trick I learned from my pal Jeff Cross R.I.P.) but on that faithful day it just got too hot and I was in the middle of nowhere on the way home..I tired to make it to Duquoin so I could get to WalMart and get more oil for it but about halfway there (in rural Perry County also in the middle or nowhere) it finally burnt it's last bit of oil and died billowing out white smoke from the oil tank. Yesterday at 11:30 I called the dealership and we went together in a car hauler to get it and bring it back to it's original home..To further add to my misfortune the car hauler got stuck in the mud after hitching up my car, We almost flipped over sideways causing me and the driver to go all day with out food but finally at about 15:30ish the mechanic from the dealer and another member arrived in a pickup and used a chain to pull the car hauler out of the mud..I now sit carless and wait to see what they can do for me..They already know the car is NOT fixable because not long after the crash when I had to get a damage estimate for insurance I took it there and they just wrote TOTAL LOSS..So R.I.P. a not so quick life message
Just wanted to tell everyone you should live life everyday as if it were your last because it just may be and try to do at least one good thing for someone at least once in that day in some way it may come back to you in the end

Today at 0655 eastern time I watched my step father take his last breathe/felt his heart beat for the last time: he had lung cancer and we lived 1- 1/2 away and with my own illnesses I didn't make to many trips there so to me it was a surprise to find out he had cancer because my mother felt it best so I could deal with my own illness- well anyway last night at 9:30 at night I get a call that the cancer had spread(surprise to me ) and the doctors asked my mother to gather the family because his time was limited because while early in the day he was alert around mid afternoon he was unresponsive. I gathered my family quickly and we drove to NY from CT and got there 1-1/2 later - it got late and my daughters were taken to my mothers house after they said their good byes to make it easier on them I stood behind with my sister. He held on for a while but that cop gut feeling told me time was running out at 6 I told my sister he doesn't have much longer to go at 0638 his pulse and oxygen level started dropping and 6minutes later he took his last breathe

I guess the moral he always tried to help others even with small gestures and n the end the doctors said the cancer mainly caused him discomfort but surprisingly he never needed pain meds and his death was quick and painless basically going into an eternal sleep.
I have seen alot of things in my 12 years of law enforcement have held strangers hands as they died including a 2 year old girl but this was the hardest thing I ever had to do.....RIP Jose E. Santiago
