A Chester Police Officer was killed in a high speed pursuit late last Friday night.

The officer has been identified as 22-year-old James Brockmeyer. The crash occurred on Palestine Road in Randolph County, about 2 miles north of Chester. He was transported from the crash site to Memorial Hospital in Chester where he died. The subject of the vehicle pursuit is the subject of a manhunt and is said to be a 34-year-old Chester man.

UPDATE:

Sorry it took me so long, Here is more details and one of which is shocking, the suspect was wanted on a assault charge, his car was a heavily modded Pontiac G6, He was speeding and the Chester officer attempted to stop him..Chase reached speeds of 176 MPH and the officer hollered on the PA for him to pull over,he lost the cop and then he hit 208 MPH ohmy.png. The chase was at night and the officer couldn't even begin to get closer at these speeds, There was a sharp turn with a steep hill and he couldn't slow in time, Cruiser ran off the road and rolled several times..He had to be cut out of the car.

The suspect then fled to St. Louis but was later arrested there and held originally on Felony Fleeing And Evading, Upon extradition back to Illinois Randolph County Prosecutor upgraded the charges to:

Aggrevated Felonly Fleeing And Evading, Wreckless Driving, Wreckless Homicide, and 1st Degree Murder.

This punk is lucky we don't have a death penalty here no more is all I can say.

1st degree murder? Not manslaughter (3rd degree)?

Still, I hope he's going away for a long time.

I didn't know him but the officer was well liked in Randolph County so they threw the book at this guy.

I'll admit it's a first time I've ever read of anyone facing 1st degree murder from a chase that didn't make contact with a squad car and cause a wreck, but because he is indeed the cause of the resulting death they can push it, Wether or not it'll stick remains to be seen and on how well a alwayer this guy gets.

At 208 I don't think even a Charger could catch up. That's 333 km/h. You'd need a Lamborghini to catch him.

What are the guidelines for abandoning pursuits there? Over here, whenever a pursuit end with the suspect crashing and dying, it's always blamed on the police. Criminals are almost treated better than victims. Shameful.

As a result, the police end a chase whenever the fleeing driver crossed the centre line or drives far too fast (like 100 mph). This happened recently with a group of drunk youths. However, the police re-engaged the pursuit when they saw them in another place. I think they deployed road spikes eventually. The Independent Police Conduct Authority criticised the police for re-engaging the pursuit after it became "too dangerous".

Back to Chester, I don't know if the 1st-degree murder charge will stick, but even if he's only convicted of Felony Fleeing and Evading, Reckless Driving and Reckless Homicide, he'll still spend a really long time in prison.

It varies by dept. actually..They all set their own policy, Most around here will NOT terminate a pursuit but rather will ease off a bit when you get too dangerous, They will still be on you just without lights and siren and high speed. Illinois is one of the only states where there is no standard high speed pursuit training (found this out talking with a cop from up North on YouTube..Sam Goole, goes by Badge764)

Alot of local sheriff's dept.s have the spikes too but they are a foam stick block type and not the long chain like you guys use there, They are known as STOP STICKS, Basically it's a thin aluminium block with holes on all tops of it for the spikes and foam inside that. Still not everywhere has these and sometimes they resort to what they saw on TV, I can't count how many times in my old hometown Zeigler I saw cop cars sitting off to the side at the station parking lot with their front bumpers ripped off cause someone tried to do a P.I.T. and it didn't work right, It spun the car round but they also lost the bumper tongue.png.
